The natural setting of Brown County State Park is enhanced by the look of the various hand-hewed log park structures, many of which were built in the late 1930's by local craftsmen as part of depression era work programs.  After the existing overlook was demolished due to severe deterioration, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources asked our office to design a new structure.  Expecting a metal fire tower as a replacement for the wood overlook, the Department of Natural Resources allowed us to review the original construction documents for the overlook. Using the existing documents, our office prepared plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the replication of the original Overlook.  We saved funds by using the high qualty materials indigenous to the area, including 60 foot tall poplar trees that as we completed our drawings were still standing in the neighboring Yellowood State Forest.  The project was completed without a construction change order and 10% under the budget of a metal fire tower, even with the costs of replicating many of the log detail from the c.1930 Overlook.

The Overlook is enjoyed not only for the breathtaking views, but also as a picnic and gathering spot year-round by many of the park visitors.
